PhD : Adopting New E-Procurement Technologies: RFID in the UK Health Sector
Applications are invited for a three-year PhD Industrial studentship, supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), to be undertaken within the Engineering Systems & Management Research Group at Aston University. The successful candidate will work closely with our industrial sponsor, the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency. The position is available immediately.
Project Description
This research project concerns the management of new technologies. It will explore the concept and practice of ‘smart followership' in e-procurement: being in a strong position to use new technologies as they become more prevalent, to maximise the performance of processes/operations in their organisations without significant investment. The concept is especially pertinent in settings such as the NHS, where organizations' are part of complex networks (supply networks, and regional health economies) and their adoption decisions are part of complex investment plans.
The research will therefore be centred on the UK health sector, and will focus on RFID. Given that there is as yet very little use of RFID in the NHS, the research design will enable knowledge transfer from other sectors and/or other nations.
Person Specification
We are looking for an outstanding, highly motivated individual with good communication and writing skills. The successful candidate should have a first class or 2i Honours degree in the subject areas of logistics/supply chain management, IT, business and management, or an appropriate allied discipline and Employment (or placement) experience in the subject areas above would be advantageous.
Funding Notes
Financial Support
The studentship will provide tuition fees to Home/EU rate and maintenance at the standard EPSRC rate of £12,940 for 2008/9 (with corresponding standard EPSRC increase for the following two years) plus an additional £3,000 per year from the industrial sponsor.
Applicants must fulfill the eligibility criteria for EPSRC funding through UK nationality and/or residency status (See http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/).
