Physicist (Postdoc) The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI/AVL)
Job description
Function title: Physicist (Postdoc) AT 138/08
At the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AVL) EPID images are acquired, and by means of a back-projection algorithm converted to dose distributions in a plane intersecting the isocenter, perpendicular to the beam axis. In this plane, a 2D field-by-field comparison is performed between the back-projected EPID and planned dose distributions using the ?-evaluation method. Currently, treatment plans of most cancer patients treated with curative intent, generally irradiated with IMRT techniques, are already validated based on in vivo EPID measurements. Because our back-projection model yields information on the 3D dose distribution in the patient, it seems worthwhile to explore the additional possibilities of using 3D dose verification using EPIDs, and to compare its use in the clinic with the current practice using 2D comparisons.
The aim of the project is to further investigate 3D in vivo EPID dosimetry as a tool for IMRT verification in the clinic for various patient sites. For this purpose it is necessary first to test the model for a number of clinically relevant situations in phantoms with 3D dose distributions calculated with our treatment planning system (Philips, Pinnacle). Next the model has to be tested in vivo for various IMRT techniques, and decision criteria for treatment intervention have to be established. Finally, methods to integrate 3D in vivo dosimetry and image-guided radiotherapy, IGRT, should also be further developed and introduced in the clinic.
Requirements
Required education/skills:University Graduate
We are looking for a postgraduate physicist, preferably with experience in IMRT verification. The project will be performed in a multi-disciplinary team including PhD students, (clinical) physicists and clinicians. Requirements for the candidate include experience with dosimetry equipment, treatment planning, computer programming, initiative, creativity, enthusiasm and publication skills.
