EPSRC PhD Studentship: Cardiovascular Physics and Engineering to Improve Therapy of Abnormal Heart Rhythms Institute of Cellular Medicine

Reference Code: ICM59

Details:

Supervisor(s): Dr Philip Langley, Professor Alan Murray
Sponsor: EPSRC
Duration: 4 years from September 2008 - MRes Medical and Molecular Biosciences followed by a 3 year PhD.

Project Description
This project is offered by the Cardiovascular Physics and Engineering Research Group which is highly focused on tackling real clinical problems and providing excellent research training. In year 1 of this integrated MRes/PhD programme the student will acquire research skills across a broad range of bioscience topics. In years 2 to 4 the student will undertake the PhD project, which aims to improve the treatment of the most common abnormal heart rhythm; atrial fibrillation. You will develop skills in recording and analysing human cardiac electrophysiological data and in designing and testing a prototype device for real-time measurement and analysis.

Value of the Award and Eligibility
Due to funding criteria, this award is only available to UK and EU applicants. The award for a UK student covers fees and an annual stipend (starting at £12,940). EU candidates are normally eligible for a fees only award. Candidates without a prior Master's qualification will be funded for four years (MRes-1 year; PhD-3 years). For those already possessing a Master's, funding will be for 3 years only.

Person Specification
The ideal candidate will be an engineering or physics graduate with a strong interest in applying research to a real clinical problem. You must be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team which includes engineers and clinicians. Some experience of signal processing and electronic design is desirable and applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, a first-class or upper-second-class Honours degree.

How to Apply
You must complete the University’s postgraduate application form, selecting ‘PhD Faculty of Medical Sciences (full time)’ as the programme of study and inserting the reference number ICM59. Only mandatory fields need to be completed (no personal statement required) and a CV, a covering letter and (if English is not your first language) a copy of your English language qualifications must be attached. The covering letter must state the title of the studentship, quote the reference number ICM59 and state how your interests and experience relate to the project.
