PhD Studentship Department of Geology / Old Library, University of Dublin

Status: 3 year contract
Salary: €18,000 per annum

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD Studentship with the Department of Geology / Old Library, Trinity College , Dublin .

Supervisors: Dr. Robbie Goodhue / Ms Susie Bioletti

Background
Preservation of Cultural Heritage is recognized as our duty for future generations. The Old Library at Trinity College is one of Ireland and College's most important buildings, and is the repository for the Library's treasures, including medieval Irish Manuscripts such as the Book of Kells. It functions as a storage area, a display venue, and a research facility for early printed books, manuscripts and college archives. It is one of the most popular visitor attractions in the country as well as one of the great research libraries of the world. An extensive cleaning under the Save the Treasures of the Long Room campaign is currently underway to remove accumulated dust from 200,000 volumes in the Long Room, as well as several complimentary studies to document the condition of the collection, the Old Library Building and its internal environment.

A significant part of this study is an examination of the dust which is potentially hazardous to the collection and occupants of building. Various analytical techniques (x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, transmitted light microscopy) will be employed in the study. The types, sources, accumulation rates and location of ‘new' dust will be monitored in addition to complete analysis of the existing dust. The PhD dissertation will provide scientific information and recommendations which will help to address the dust issue in the future management of this irreplaceable heritage collection.

University (EU) fees will be covered. Salary: €18,000 per annum

Candidates should have a first class or upper second class honours degree in Science / or Conservation, or an MSc in an appropriate field.

Applications for this studentship (including a c.v. and the names and contact details of two referees) should be sent to:
