MSc by Research - Design for Cost on New Defence Support Technology
Academic Supervisors: Dr Paul Baguley and Professor Rajkumar Roy
Duration: 1 year
Supported by Lockheed Martin UK INSYS Ltd, a studentship of up to £8,000 p.a. for 1year plus fees* is available.
Cranfield University is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake this exciting collaborative MSc by research with Lockheed Martin UK INSYS Ltd. The research focuses on a munitions data logger as part of a through life munitions capability. Due to the absence of commercial off the shelf (COTS) solutions for the data logger the aim of the project is to identify cost reduction opportunities during the design stages.
The focus for achieving cost reduction will be primarily on design for cost and value engineering processes integrating with cost of supply issues. Important aspects of this process involve cost modelling, identifying methods of cost reduction and value engineering, and identifying knowledge requirements for cost reduction. Therefore the project shall identify a value engineering methodology and a set of criteria for selecting the most robust and cost effective design solution during the design stages of the data logger. The methodology shall be applied to develop initial solutions as case studies to some aspects of the data logger's design.
The successful candidate will spend their time between Cranfield University campus and Lockheed Martin's Ampthill base, Bedfordshire.
Closing date: 15th October 2008
Entry Requirements
Applicants should have a First or Second Class UK Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as manufacturing, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering.
Funding
*Supported by Lockheed Martin UK INSYS Ltd, this studentship will cover the tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only and provide a bursary of up to £8,000 for one year dependent upon qualifications and experience.
