Postdoctoral fellowship at CEMEF : Modeling of Structure and Segregation for Solidification Processes

Solidification activities of the Center for Materials Forming (CEMEF) concern modeling of processes and physical metallurgy. A post-doctoral fellow position is opened for a two-year period:

* to develop the field of modeling structure and segregation,
* to analyze interactions between structural evolution and thermomechanics.

Properties of casting are to be controlled for optimizing the forming steps that follow in the materials processing route. This requires tailoring of structures and its associated chemical segregations formed upon solidification. Several modeling approaches at different scales (either Representative Elementary Volume -REV- of mushy material, or microstructural scale) are currently developed at CEMEF based on multiphase approach, cellular automaton (CA) and level sets. All are based on or coupled with the finite element (FE) method.

Work will consists of:
i- developing a level set method for modeling into details the growth of a solid-liquid interface,
ii- compare with predictions carried out using existing FE software coupled with the CA method developed at CEMEF,
iii- develop numerical simulations involving fluid flow and solid deformation at different scales (REV, process scale).

Activities will take place in the context of the C++ CIMLIB library. Good programming skills are requested, together with knowledge in the materials science and engineering.
