PhD Studentship at Exeter Climate Systems (XCS)  

Statistical-dynamical modelling and analysis of large-scale atmospheric flows

Exeter Climate Systems (www.secam.ex.ac.uk/xcs) is a rapidly growing centre of excellence in the application of mathematics and statistics in weather and climate science. It is located within the School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics (SECaM) at the University of Exeter, UK. The centre has close working affiliations with the UK Met Office and the Hadley Centre.

We have a vacancy for a three-year fully funded PhD studentship to start in October 2008 or later on empirical modelling and analysis of large-scale atmospheric flows. The project will be supervised by Dr Frank Kwasniok.

The position is funded by SECaM through EPSRC Doctoral Training Account. The successful applicant will receive a stipend of GBP 13,500 per year, rising to GBP 14,000 in the third year, in addition to the payment of all their tuition fees (at UK/EU level; other applicants would need additional funding).

Project:
The project deals with modelling and analysis of large-scale atmospheric flows using empirical statistical-dynamical models. Predictability and complexity of the atmospheric circulation are investigated using concepts and methods from dynamical systems theory and statistical signal processing. A focus lies on locally linear and regime-dependent modelling. Studied data sets may range from simple conceptual models to realistic reanalysis or observational data. The results from this work have practical implications for weather forecasting and statistical downscaling.

Requirements:

Candidates should have at least a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject such as mathematics, statistics, physics, meteorology, oceanography or climatology. The student should preferably have some experience of programming.
