PhD scholarship in Quantitative (hydro)geology

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship in the area of quantitative hydrogeology The PhD position will be funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research in the research project REMTEC.

A newly established strategic research project, Innovative REMediation and assessment TEChnologies for contaminated soil and groundwater (REMTEC) has as one of its research goals to develop remediation technologies for low permeability settings such as clayey till. A focus area will be multi-scale (hydro)geological characterization and modeling of field scale transport and degradation of chlorinated solvents in clayey till. The REMTEC consortium consists of research groups from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) and National Environmental Research Institute (DMU/NERI) in collaboration with consulting companies. The project is funded by the Danish Council for Strategic Research for the period 2008-2011.

Two main research topics have been defined for the field scale (hydro)geology part:

• Multi-scale characterization of geological and biogeochemical variability using glacial dynamic, geostatistical and potentially geophysical methods.
• Eksperimental and numerical investigations of flow, transport and degradation processes in fractured till and embedded sand lenses

We are seeking a PhD candidate with a background and strong interest in at least two of the following topics:

• Characterization of glacial deposits using classical geological tools
• Use of geo-statistical or other methods for quantitative evaluation of spatial variability in geological media
• Quantitative hydrogeology like interpretation of hydraulic tests and tracer experiments.
• Experience with installation of field equipment, direct-push drilling, hydraulic testing, and monitoring techniques
• Groundwater flow and solute transport modeling.

The PhD project will be carried out in close collaboration with a group of PhD students and researchers from GEUS (www.geus.dk) and DTU Environment (www.env.dtu.dk)

The PhD candidate will be enrolled at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU Environment with two co-supervisors from GEUS. The PhD scholarship is financed by REMTEC. The full scholarship will be for an enrollment period of 3 years.

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, which may be obtained from the DTU homepage - http://www.dtu.dk/English/education/Phd_Education.aspx

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

Further information is available from Professor Poul L. Bjerg, DTU Environment, e-mail plb@env.dtu.dk.

Applications with enclosures should be submitted by e-mail to Poul L. Bjerg, plb@env.dtu.dk by August 15th 2008 at 12:00 noon. Applications must include a curriculum vitae and documentation of a completed master's degree.

The successful candidate will be expected to start as soon as possible after September, 1st 2008.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
