Scholarship for International Students

PhD Studentship Multi-Scale Modelling The Influence Of Electrostatics During Pharmaceutical Processing

Fully funded Studentship with sanofi-aventis.

Supervisor Dr C Wu

Closing date 30th September 2008

With generous sponsorship from the industrial partner, we are recruiting a PhD student for a collaborative research project between the University of Birmingham and sanofi-aventis. A scholarship is available NOW to cover an annual stipend and fees, and it is open to all nationals.

The project will build on a current project concerning the development of multiscale models for powder processing; ‘From particle to products' funded by the EPSRC through an Advanced Research Fellowship awarded to Dr. C. Wu.

The focus of the research will be on advancing our current multiscale models to take into account the effect of electrostatics. Consequently, this will enable a numerical evaluation of how electrostatic charge may affect the flow and compaction behaviour of pharmaceutical formulations. The project has direct relevance to the pharmaceutical industry.

The research student will be enrolled in the School of Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham on a three year PhD studentship.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in computational modelling. Computer programming skills with Fortran is essential, and some experience in discrete element modelling or electrostatics would be an advantage.

Candidates should have a first or upper second class undergraduate degree, or an MSc in a relevant discipline. An excellent command in written and spoken English is essential. As the project involves annual meetings at sanofi-aventis R&D sites across the Europe, a willingness to travel abroad is also essential.
