PhD position in the field vertebrate palaeontology
The position is at the Department of Physiology and Developmental Biology, subdepartment of Evolutionary Organismal Biology.
Description
The phylogenetic resolution of parts of the lungfish stem group is poor, limiting our ability to investigate the morphological evolution of this long-lived and important sarcopterygian group. A question of particular interest is the evolution and relationships of the long-snouted lungfishes. These morphologically distinctive lungfishes, which are largely restricted to the Late Devonian, include both tooth-plated and denticulated forms and are distributed in marine as well as non-marine environments. They are frequently associated with tetrapods.
The PhD position is for 4 years, with a possibility of extension depending on the amount of departmental duties such as assisting in courses at the undergraduate level. They are salaried, pensionable positions including medical cover and the possibility of paid parental leave, and are open to all nationalities. Starting date is by agreement, but no later than autumn 2008.
We are looking for candidates who have obtained, or are expected to obtain by the end of the academic year 2006-07, a degree in a biological or geological subject. Preference will be given to applicants with experience of palaeontological research.
Interested candidates should send an application letter, a CV and a brief summary of research experience.
