Scholarship for International Students

Postdoct position in Mathematics, University of Oslo

All positions are available from October 1, 2008, but the start date may be delayed if necessary.

The positions will be granted for a period of 2 years.

CMA is an international research centre in which the focus of the research is mathematics motivated from applications, with emphasis on problems arising from modern scientific computing. Classical pure mathematicians and numerical analysts with a strong commitment to theory are merged in the centre. The activity at CMA is built upon four pillars represented by different research areas – geometry, stochastic analysis, differential equations, and applications in the physical sciences; the latter group mainly focuses on computational problems in quantum mechanics and astrophysics. The main vision of CMA is:

To create significant development in modern mathematics based on an interplay between theory, computations, and applications.

Special requirements for the announced positions
One of the positions is tied to the EURYI-project of Associate Professor Snorre Christiansen. For this position we are looking for a candidate interested in mathematical and/or practical aspects of simulating partial differential equations from general relativity. A background from numerical analysis, possibly computational physics, is preferable.

For the remaining 2 positions, no such preferences are given. Here applicants will be evaluated and ranked with respect to the research plan of the centre. Whoever is employed must demonstrate their scientific competence within mathematics or a related applied area. Preference will be given to applicants with experience of computational problems within the relevant areas, or with experience in problems that combine aspects from two or more of the areas. The full research plan can be found here: http://www.cma.uio.no/researchplan/

Applicants must have submitted their dissertation before the deadline for submitting the application for the position, or already have achieved a PhD degree.

The procedures for employments are in general regulated by the rules for employment in post doctor positions/scientific positions at the University of Oslo,

A good command of English is required of all students attending the University of Oslo.

The University of Oslo wants more women in scientific positions, and thus women are encouraged to apply.

UiO has an agreement for all employees, aiming to secure rights to research results a.o.
