PhD scholarship in modeling of stochastic processes and signals

Denmark. PhD scholarship in modeling of stochastic processes and signals, in particular the dynamics of motile microorganisms and shot-noise limited localization of fluorescent probes on stretched DNA. A 3-year full stipend for graduate study leading to a PhD in engineering is available in the Stochastic Systems and Signals group at the Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree and a good background in theoretical physics/applied mathematics, in particular in statistical mechanics and computer programming. In return, he/she will receive an all-round training in the analysis and modelling of stochastic systems and signals, in particular

1. data-driven modelling of motile microorganisms (cells and neurites),
2. statistical assessment of the effect of nanostructures on biological properties of cells, such as stem cells, neurons, and neuronal networks, based on experiments performed by partners in Nanoscale (see below),
3. Brownian motion of DNA in nano-channels, and
4. shot-noise limited localization of fluorescent probes along stretched DNA.

The stipend is partially funded by two EU FP7 projects (Nanoscale and ReaDNA) in which we will analyse and model motility data in order to characterize motility on various nano-structured surfaces, and localize fluorescent probes along DNA that is imperfectly stretched in nano-channels.

For an efficient and energetic student there will be time to pursue other subjects as well. In addition to motility models and optimal localization of fluorophores, the current interests of our group are (a) facilitated diffusion, (b) molecular motors, (c) forces and proteins, and we collaborate with experimentalist colleagues in the department and abroad when we can make a difference for an interesting experiment.

For more information, contact the project’s main supervisor, Senior Researcher, Dr.Scient. Henrik Flyvbjerg, Henrik.Flyvbjerg@nanotech.dtu.dk, and Tel: (+45) 4525 6736 (on vacation in July), or its co-supervisor, Assistant Professor, Ph.D. Kristian Mølhave, Kristian.Molhave@nanotech.dtu.dk, Tel: (+45) 4525 6395.

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, which may be obtained by application to the PhD programme office at tel: +45 45 25 11 76 or +45 45 25 11 77.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.
