Doctoral Research Fellowship WITHIN THE FIELD “CONTEMPORARY ARABIC LITERATURE”

DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (SKO/post code 1017) WITHIN THE FIELD “CONTEMPORARY ARABIC LITERATURE” is available at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages (IKOS), University of Oslo.

The successful candidate will be working with questions related to the field of “Contemporary Arabic literature”. Information about related research projects can be found on: http://www.hf.uio.no/ikos/forskning/forskningsprosjekter/stephan/guth1/index.html and http://www.hf.uio.no/ikos/forskning/forskningsprosjekter/stephan/stephan2/index.html.

The successful Ph.D. project will analyze a corpus of contemporary Arabic literary texts with the aim of localizing them on the plane of intersection between indigenous tradition and global norms. This will necessitate a critical examination of hermeneutical concepts developed so far in the West. The overall aim of the project should be an improved understanding of the behaviour of Arabic culture under the terms of globalisation and of existential orientations in the contemporary Middle East.

The successful candidate is expected to affiliate with the existing research milieu or network and to contribute to the further development of this.

The position is available for a period of three years and is affiliated with the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages.

If the applicant has worked as a doctoral research fellow prior to being hired at the Faculty of Humanities, that period of time will be deducted from the allotted 3 year period. Candidates who are accepted must participate in the Faculty of Humanities’ researcher education programme (cf. regulations and supplementary provisions for the faculty’s researcher education) and must also engage in the designated research activities on a 100 percent basis. The designated aim of the project is to complete a doctoral dissertation to be defended at a public disputation for the Ph.D.-degree.

Requirements:

- a Master degree, or equivalent, in Arabic Language and Literature, Arabic and Islamic Studies, or a Middle Eastern Studies program;

- preferably a background in Comparative Literature and/or the study of a Euro-pean literature;

- fluency in Arabic and English, preferably also another Oriental and European language, esp. French and German

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project description and on the assumed academic and personal ability on the part of the candidates to complete the dissertation within the given time frame. The shortlisted candidates may be called for an interview at the University of Oslo.

The successful candidate is expected to start the doctoral research fellowship within the first quarter of 2009.
