Scholarship for International Students

PhD Studentship Design Optimisation of the Patented MCAST Equipment, Brunel University

UK.Applications from suitable candidates are invited for an EPSRC sponsored PhD studentship available in BCAST (Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology) at Brunel University. The studentship is for 3 years and covers both full tuition fees and a tax-free bursary up to £1,300 per month.

BCAST is an academic research centre focusing on solidification research with an international reputation. BCAST currently comprises 31 research staff and 4 supporting staff. Our research covers structures and properties of metallic liquids, nucleation control through both chemical and physical means, alloy development and technological innovation. BCAST is also well equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities for both solidification processing and materials characterisation. See http://bcast.brunel.ac.uk for more information.

MCAST (melt conditioning by advanced shear technology) is an innovative process for liquid metal treatment before casting. It was developed by BCAST at Brunel University and has protection worldwide. The successful candidate will be expected to carry out detailed design optimisation of every functional unit of the MCAST machine for improved processing efficiency, energy consumption, robustness, and durability. This will involve materials selection, mechanical design optimisation, heat transfer calculation, and process development. Therefore, the candidate will be expected to have a first class or second upper class degree in mechanical engineering or any other related engineering subject. Solid knowledge base and experience in mechanical design using AUTOCAD is essential. In addition, you are expected to work closely with a number of other researchers, and therefore being a team player is very important.

Application documents, including an updated CV, a cover letter, and the names and contacts details of 2 referees should be send to Professor Z. Fan, BCAST, Brunel University Uxbridge, Middlesex, UB8 3PH, UK, or via email (mtstzzf@brunel.ac.uk).

Closing date for receipt of applications is: 13 June 2008
