Scholarship for International Students

PhD Studentships in Statistics and Modelling Science, University of Strathclyde

UK. 3 years full time PhD studentship is offered within in Dept of Statistics and Modelling Science (STAMS). Student will be involved in a research project entitled with “Mathematical Modelling of the Spread of Hepatitis C among Injecting Drug Users (IDUs) in Scotland”. This project is co-funded by EPSRC/Health Protection Scotland (HPS).

Interested candidates should hold or expect to hold at least a good Honours degree (2.1 or above) in a relevant discipline. The studentship is available for applicants from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK.

The project aims to develop mathematical models for the spread of HCV amongst IDUs. The models will use differential equations in the first instance. Such models have been usefully employed to inform public health policy to control the spread of HIV amongst IDUs in the USA.

A very important part of this project is the link with HPS and the use of epidemiological data on HCV from HPS to estimate the parameters in our models as well as guidance from HPS staff in the model formulation. Also link in with the detailed numerical computer simulation models of the spread of HCV used by Dr Hutchison and colleagues.

There is a large and growing epidemiology research group at STAMS/HPS, headed by Professor Chris Robertson with whom this project would also be discussed. This project will be take up in October 2008.
