PhD student for project on cortico-thalamic system

Job description
This PhD project is intended to advance the knowledge of the cortico-thalamic system in normal and pathological network interactions underlying neural information processing and plasticity. Functional studies such as electrical brain stimulation studies, local field potential studies and evoked potentials studies will be performed in WAG/Rij rats in order to acquire a better understanding of these network interactions. This four-year PhD project will take place at the Department of Biological Psychology of the Nijmegen Institute for Cognition and Information (NICI).
Requirements
University Graduate
Applicants should have a strong interest in Biological Psychology or Medical Biology (preferably holding an MSc) and hands-on experience in in vivo work with rats, preferably EEG studies. The candidate should have a so-called Article 12 registration (as required under the Experiments on Animals Act) or be willing to obtain this, excellent experimental skills, some programming skills (Matlab), a good command of oral and written English, and should be highly motivated to get his/her PhD within 4 years. Starting date of the project is 1 June 2008. The deadline for application letters is 15 May 2008. A strong internal candidate is available.

The successful applicant will become a member of the Department of Biological Psychology. The department is well equipped for the recording of local field potentials in free moving animals and has programmable stimulators. The work is part of a larger project (Brain-Gain), in which recording and analysis techniques and tools will be developed for brain-computer interfacing. Conditions of employment
Estimated maximum salary per month: eur 2500 - 3000
Maximum salary amount in Euro's a month 2558
Employment basis: Temporary for specified period

Additional conditions of employment:
The candidate will be appointed as a PhD student (1.0 FTE) for a period of four years. The candidate’s performance will be evaluated after 18 months. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2½ years. Salary: PhD scale.
