Effects of varenicline and cytisine on ad-lib smoking and on tobacco withdrawal
Applications are invited for a full-time, +3 PhD Studentship at the Queen Mary University of London campus of the UK Centre for Tobacco Control Studies (UKCTCS). The studentship is intended to support a postgraduate investigator seeking to establish a career in epidemiological, medical and/or behavioural sciences research with a focus on tobacco control.
This project will consist of appraisal of the existing methodology of evaluating smoking cessation treatments, and conduct of series of studies to examine effects of cytisine and varenicline on ad-lib smoking and on post-cessation withdrawal symptoms. This studentship is designed to give broad-based training in research methods that will allow the supervisors and student to assess strengths of the student and their interests for subsequent postdoctoral training.
The successful student will work under the supervision of Professor Peter Hajek, Queen Mary University of London, with Professor Robert West, University College London, and Dr Paul Aveyard, University of Birmingham, as co-supervisors. The successful student will be registered for a PhD from September 2008 and will receive a tax-free stipend of £12,600 per annum, payment of tuition fees, and an allowance for travel/conference attendance for a period of three years. Stipends may only be paid to students who are UK resident or EU students meeting standard ESRC eligibility requirements. Fees-only awards will be provided for eligible EU students who do not satisfy the basic residential eligibility requirements.
