1 Postdoc (male/female) and 2 Ph.D. positions (male/female)
The Christian-Albrechts- University (CAU) at Kiel is the largest university in Schleswig-Holstein, Northern Germany, with more than 21.000 Students and 2800 members of staff. The national excellence of the geosciences in Kiel is documented through by participating one of the geoscientific clusters of excellence in Germany (”Future Ocean”) as well as the graduate school “Human Development in Landscapes”.
The working group Geohydromodelling at the Institute for Geosciences invites applications for the following positions, which are available within research projects and to be filled by 1.4.2008 or later:
1 Postdoc (male/female) and
2 Ph.D. positions (male/female)
Our profile
The research area of the working group Geohydromodelling is modelling and numerical simulation of flow and reactive transport processes in the subsurface, e.g. at contaminated ground water sites of for subsurface storage of greenhouse gases in geologic reservoirs. For this, the required numerical codes are developed and applied in real case studies. The working group participates in national research programs, funded by the German Research Foundation or the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, but is also involved in projects with industry.
Your profile
You have a university degree in geosciences, physics, geophysics, mathematics or engineering sciences. In case of the Postdoc position, you have obtained a Ph.D. in one of these fields. You are interested in working on geoscientific questions and have a good knowledge of mathematics and informatics. In case of the Postdoc position you have ideally experiences in developing and applying scientific software. Knowledge on flow- and reactive transport processes as well as on the C/C++ programming language are beneficial for all positions. We are seeking team players with strong communication skills.
Your tasks
The positions are part of a research project on the subsurface storage of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide) in geologic reservoirs. Aim is the development and application of the corresponding scientific software. The main focus of research will be the development, verification and application of the software for simulating multi-phase flow and reactive multi-component transport. For this end, existing models for simulating individual processes are enhanced and coupled. Further tasks are the comparison of the developed software by benchmarking simulations and the application to real world cases to test the practical applicability of the developed codes. Using scenario simulations, the requirements for a geologic reservoir in order to guarantee a safe subsurface storage are investigated. In case of the Postdoc position, you are additionally involved in the project management.
Our Offer
The positions are to be filled starting 1.4.2008 and are limited to three years, pending the official final approval of funding. Salary will be according to TV-L E13 or E14 (Postdoc). The regular weekly working hours correspond to 100 % in the case of the Postdoc position (currently 38.7 hours), in case of the Ph.D. positions to 50% (currently 19.35 hours). The opportunity for scientific qualification or obtaining a Ph.D. is given.
The Christian-Albrechts- University aims at increasing the number of women in research and academic teaching and strongly invites applications of accordingly qualified women. Women will be preferred, provided equal qualifications and scientific performance. The CAU supports the employment of severely disabled persons. Therefore severely disabled persons will be preferred, provided equal qualifications and scientific performance.
